HINTON — A man from Seneca Rocks, W.Va., died early on Monday in a two-vehicle crash on Rawley Pike near Hinton.

Sgt. F.L. Tyler of the Virginia State Police said the driver of a 2006 Mack tractor-trailer, heading toward Harrisonburg with a load of poultry, lost control going around a curve.

The tractor-trailer, driven by Teddy Wayne Long, 44, of Dayton, crossed the centerline and overturned, Tyler said. The tractor-trailer landed on a 1999 Ford 150 pickup truck, which was traveling westbound. The resulting fire burned the two vehicles.

The driver of the pickup truck, William Harold Charlton, 65, died at the scene, Tyler said. Police cited the tractor-trailer driver for reckless driving, Tyler said. He was not seriously injured.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene at about 12:30 a.m. and closed the road for six hours. The VSP Accident Reconstruction Team and Motor Carrier Safety Team investigated the crash, and the state department of transportation set up a detour.

In addition to the state police, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, and fire departments from Clover Hill and Harrisonburg responded to the crash.
