HARRISONBURG — The Massanutten Patriots will host the first forum for the candidates running for Harrisonburg City Council at the group’s monthly meeting Thursday.
The candidates who will be present include Republicans Mayor Ted Byrd and Denise “D.D.” Dawson, and Joshua Huffman and Helen Shibut, who are running as independents.
Byrd, who is the only incumbent on the ballot, is seeking his re-election to a third four-year term, while Dawson is retiring after serving the past 12 years as finance director of Harrisonburg City Public Schools.
Huffman runs the local political blog The Virginia Conservative, while Shibut serves as the chairwoman of the Harrisonburg Libertarian Committee.
Democratic candidates Alleyn Harned and Christopher Jones were invited to the forum, but both had to decline due to prior engagements.
The candidates have been invited to present their views for Harrisonburg. After their individual presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to have their questions answered by the candidates.
The Massanutten Patriots are affiliated with the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Federation, a loose umbrella organization of tea party groups.
In addition to the candidates, the public is invited to attend the event as well. Tommy Moser, treasurer for the group, said, “We welcome everybody” to all tea party events.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and will take place at Freedom Baptist Church, 141 Pleasant Hill Road.
