HARRISONBURG — Former Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, have been charged in federal court Tuesday with illegally accepting gifts, vacations and loans from a businessman who sought special treatment from state government, The Washington Post reports.

McDonnell, who left office earlier this month, accepted almost $150,000 worth of gifts from Jonnie R. Williams, chief executive officer of Star Scientific Inc., a Virginia-based nutritional supplement manufacturer.

The company unsuccessfully tried to lobby state officials under the governor to include a product that lacks Food and Drug Administration approval into the health benefit plans of state employees.

The 14 charges, if they resulted in convictions and maximum sentences, could produce fines in excess of $1 million and put the McDonnells behind bars for decades, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
