HARRISONBURG — The Harrisonburg metro area’s population grew by 0.5 percent in July 2013 from the previous year at the same time, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The area had an estimated population of 129,136 people last summer, compared to 128,520 in July 2012.

The city of Harrisonburg’s population increased from 51,153 residents to 51,395, while Rockingham County’s grew from 77,367 to 77,741.

The 616-person growth for the metro area is largely the result of the number of births (1,419) outpacing that of deaths (924), figures show.

Virginia’s overall population grew 1 percent last year to nearly 8.3 million.

Around the Shenandoah Valley, Augusta County’s population rose from 73,635 to 73,912, while Shenandoah County’s increased from 42,614 to 42,684.

Page County saw a dip from 23,932 people to 23,821.
