HARRISONBURG — The Washington Mystics announced Friday morning that they have waived four players, including Kirby Burkholder.
Burkholder, a former James Madison shooting guard and the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, signed with the WNBA's Mystics as a free agent April 15. Preseason practice started Monday.
WNBA teams are allowed to carry only 12 players on their rosters. Before this season, they were allowed to carry only 11.
Despite getting cut by the Mystics, Burkholder’s career isn’t done. The Turner Ashby High School graduate — she is the Knights’ career scoring leader — is expected to play overseas. It’s also possible that Burkholder could sign with another WNBA team. The WNBA season opens May 16.
