HARRISONBURG — A Rockingham County grand jury on Monday indicted a New Jersey man accused of smuggling about 8 pounds of cocaine through Rockingham County.

Joe Sanchez, 35, of Jersey City, N.J., is charged with felony transporting drugs into Virginia and felony drug possession.

Following his indictment, Sanchez appeared in Rockingham County Circuit Court.
Judge Bruce Albertson scheduled Sanchez to appear in court on Aug 2. On that date, the judge will likely either schedule a plea hearing or a trial date.

A special agent with the Virginia State Police’s Criminal Interdiction Unit stopped Sanchez on March 10 for speeding at mile marker 258 on northbound Interstate 81, near Mauzy, according to police.

During the stop, the agent said that Sanchez gave him permission to search his vehicle. The agent said he found 8 pounds of suspected cocaine in a compartment inside the engine area.

The cocaine seizure is one of the largest in Rockingham County history, with a street value estimated at $120,000, police say.
