HARRISONBURG — Two central Valley residents died in this morning’s head-on crash on U.S. 11 near Blue Ridge Community College, the Virginia State Police confirmed in statement shortly after 2 p.m.

Geraldine K. Sprouse, 65, of Craigsville, and Nicholas R. Broce, 33, of Fort Defiance, died at the scene.

The crash occurred at 7:59 a.m. on U.S. 11, near College Lane in Weyers Cave. Sprouse was southbound in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when she pulled into the center turn lane, where a vehicle ahead of her was stopped. She then swerved to the left to avoid the stopped vehicle, according to a press release. That put the Silverado in the northbound lane, where it collided head-on with a northbound 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Broce.

Sprouse and Broce were not wearing seat belts, and they were the only occupants of their respective vehicles, state police say.

The drivers were not BRCC students, state police 1st Sgt. Scott VanLear said. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, he said, but it remains under investigation.

U.S. 11 was re-opened by 10:20 a.m.
