It’s not clear where the chase, which included officers from the Harrisonburg Police Department and Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, began or what charges the motorist is facing.
During the chase, an HPD cruiser crashed into a tree on South Main, just before the Forbes Center across from the James Madison University Quad. The officer driving the car was not seriously injured and no pedestrians or other motorists were hurt in the crash, which occurred on the west side of South Main. The scene is less than a mile from the gas station where the chase eventually ended.
The portion of the street between Cantrell and Port Republic Road remains closed to traffic as the accident reconstruction team investigates the crash.
Police are asking motorists to use South High Street, the other major north-south artery on the west side of the city, for the next several hours as the crash team continues its investigation.
The Daily News-Record will have more on this developing story as details become available and will have a complete report in Wednesday’s print and online editions.
