State troopers have apprehended a Shenandoah man accused of fleeing a police checkpoint during the Independence Day weekend.
Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police said Kevin Dale Miller Jr., 21, was taken into custody late Monday night in the McGaheysville area.
He is charged with felony hit and run, felony eluding, misdemeanor reckless driving, misdemeanor hit and run, and misdemeanor driving with a suspended license.
The chase began about 8 p.m. Friday near the intersection of McGaheysville and Pineville roads.
Police say Miller was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer when he stopped at the checkpoint. Tyler said he had a brief conversation with a trooper and sped off.
Virginia State Police and other law enforcement agencies ramped up patrols and other efforts over the Fourth of July holiday weekend to curb drunken driving and other unsafe behavior.
Miller led police on the chase for about 20 minutes.
During the chase, Tyler said, Miller’s car collided with a trooper’s cruiser.
Tyler said Miller drove on several roads before ditching the car on Bontz Lane in McGaheysville and running into a field.
Officers unsuccessfully searched the area for the suspect.
Miller is being held without bond at Rockingham County Jail.
