A fire Sunday afternoon destroyed a home near Woodstock.

Firefighter say a neighbor went to visit a house at 363 Fairview Circle west of Woodstock. As the neighbor unlocked the front door, hey saw smoke and called 911, firefighters say. An occupant had left the home 20 minutes earlier.

Initial firefighters on the scene reported fire  in the attic. They entered the house and attempted to attack the blaze from the inside but had to back out. Firefighter say high winds made fighting the fire difficult.

Fire Marshal David A. Ferguson said that preliminary investigation points to the fire being accidental.

Fire crews from Woodstock, Edinburg, Toms Brook, and Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze.

As firefighters battled the blaze, crews also responded to a shed fire that spread into the woods near Quicksburg and an outdoor fire south of Orkney Springs.
