UPDATE: Murder Suspect Caught
UPDATE (1:55 p.m.) - Murder suspect Richard Clay Smith of Weyers Cave has been captured during a traffic stop in Page County, Rockingham Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said.
Police stopped him on U.S. 211, and he was believed to be driving a vehicle stolen this morning in Fauquier County.
UPDATE (1:45 p.m..) - The Augusta County Sheriff's Office has announced that police are now seeking a red Jeep Cherokee that murder suspect Richard Clay Smith is suspected of stealing in Fauquier County.
A 2002 Ford Ranger that Smith is alleged to have stolen last week was recovered in Fauquier today, and a 1998 Cherokee stolen from where the pick truck was found, police say. Witnesses described the suspect, believed to be Smith, as wearing a red/maroon shirt and a blue baseball hat.
The Virginia license on the Cherokee is XUZ-9011. The vehicle has no rear-view mirror and a gymnastics sticker on the rear window.
HARRISONBURG — Elkton resident Laura Lee Williams has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death last week of Richard Orebaugh of Mount Sidney.
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that Williams, 34, is in Rockingham County Jail on the murder charge. No additional details were released.
On Monday, spokeswoman Felicia Glick had said Williams was arrested on a charge of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder in Orebaugh’s death.
Williams has also been charged by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office on a number of counts, including robbery.
Her brother, Richard Clay Smith, 47, remains at-large and wanted on a capital murder charge related to Orebaugh’s shooting.
Smith’s girlfriend, Andrea Mullan, 32, was arrested in Gloucester County, N.J., on Monday. Charges are pending against her, and police there plan to release information on her detainment later today.
Smith, of Weyers Cave, is considered armed and dangerous.
