HARRISONBURG — The Harrisonburg Fire Department has moved up in class with the Insurance Services Office, which could mean better homeowner's insurance rates for city residents.
The department announced Friday that the ISO recently upgraded its rating from Class 3 to Class 2, following a surprise in-person evaluation. An ISO representative hasn’t visited the department since 1999, although a written survey is finished for review annually.
Ten class ranks exist, with Class 1 being the best rating. Only 60 departments among 48,000 in the United States have the top rating, a city press release says. None of those are in Virginia.
Harrisonburg is one of 750 departments that rank Class 2.
In its evaluation of the fire department, the ISO reviewed the city’s water system, training records, equipment, continuing education for personnel and more.
