The Harrisonburg Police Department promoted two officers to corporal positions Sunday.

Master Police Officers Scott Drugo and Rachel Hammer will now be corporals in the patrol division.

“I think their past experience … both bring military experience to the table … and their diversity in the department will make them good leaders,” said Lt. Kurt Boshart.

Drugo, a former Turner Ashby High School teacher, has been with the department since 2003, serving most recently as a bike officer.

Drugo serves as a bicycle training instructor and he’s a member of the crash reconstruction team and civil disturbance unit.

He is also a captain with the Army National Guard. He has been deployed several times, including to Kosovo.

Hammer joined the department in April 2006. Before joining the HPD, Hammer was an U.S. Capitol Police Officer.

She started on patrol with HPD and later became the Community Resource Officer in the Crime Prevention Unit.

In addition to her current duties, she is a Crisis Negotiator and Crisis Intervention Team member.

Hammer is a first sergeant as a drill instructor with the U.S. Army Reserves. Hammer has been deployed to Iraq twice.
