New Log Cabin To Open

City Restaurant To Feature Barbecue

HARRISONBURG — When Cole Shifflett’s parents took over Log Cabin Barbecue on Spotswood Trail, he was only 16.

He had just gotten his driver’s license.

Twelve years later, the 28-year-old Shifflett of Massanutten will open the doors to his own version of the restaurant — albeit decidedly similar to the first — at 1011 Port Republic Road in Harrisonburg. He hopes to open next month, although he isn’t sure of a specific  date yet.

The site housed Flip ‘N Burg-R until May, when it closed six months after opening. The building was constructed for the restaurant. 

Although hype and long lines welcomed Flip ‘N Burg-R, business appeared to drop off significantly after the early stampede.

Shifflett believes Log Cabin Barbecue will do better at the site, which fronts a strip center anchored by a Food Lion supermarket, because of its long-standing good name in the area.

His team will cook up the familiar hickory- smoked, hand-pulled barbecue and handmade sauce, as well as a host of other family recipes.

Throughout his time at James Madison University, where he went after graduating from Spotswood High School, Shifflett couldn’t get the idea of opening his own restaurant out of his mind.

“It’s been something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said.

After researching possible locations, such as Ruckersville, Charlottesville and Bridgewater, he decided to open the restaurant closer to home.

“This [location] kind of really hit the majority of the marks I was looking for,” Shifflett said.

The location is conveniently located to JMU, Rockingham Memorial Hospital and several subdivisions, he noted.

“Obviously, we’re hoping to cater toward the students, as well as the faculty and staff at JMU,” he said, adding that he hopes to offer tailgating packages and other Dukes-friendly items. 

Shifflett has more than just this one location in mind.

“I would like to not stop at two,” he said, counting the first location, now owned and operated by his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Meredith Harsh. “As a family, we would like to see it grow.”

The original location opened in 1994 in a small, 200-year-old log cabin at the bottom of Massanutten Mountain. At the start, it was carryout only and closed every winter.

When Shifflett’s parents, Les and Jane Shifflett, took over 12 years ago, they began serving barbecue year-round and opened up the building to dine-in customers.
