NEW: Man Charged In Accidental Shooting

Police charged Jeremy Reid, 28, with felony shooting from an occupied dwelling and misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm.

Rockingham County deputies arrested a Fulks Run man claiming he accidentally shot another man this morning.

Deputies responded to a home at 14480 Nash Hill Lane in Fulks Run around 10:30 a.m.

Deputies say a man at the residence was cleaning a rifle and pointing it at a glass door. Police say he pulled the trigger and the weapon fired. The round traveled through the glass door and struck Gene Bare, 56, of Fulks Run.

Bare was standing outside by a storage unit about 80 yards away, deputies say. The round hit the man in the upper right arm, went through the arm and lodged in his chest cavity, police say. 

He was taken by ambulance to J. Frank Hillyard Middle School, and then was flown by medical helicopter to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He is in critical condition.

He was released from the Rockingham County Jail on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
