A Rockingham County man died this afternoon after his wife accidentally struck him with a van.
Emergency crews responded to Welch Lane, in the Grassy Creek Trailer Park, shortly after noon for the report of a single-vehicle wreck.
Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police said Virginia Ann Knicely, 77, was backing her 2003 Ford Windstar minivan out of the driveway. Her husband, Ernest Knicely, 84, was outside the vehicle directing her.
Tyler said the passenger door was open on the van. As the van was backing up, the door struck the man, knocking him to the ground.
The man was taken by ambulance to Sentara RMH Medical Center about 2½ miles away with plans to fly him by medical helicopter to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. However, police say he died at Sentara RMH.
