NEW: Neighborhood Groups Wants 'Felony Box' Removed From City Applications

The Northeast Neighborhood Association is taking the lead to “ban the box” on area job applications.

The group will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lucy F. Simms Continuing Education Center, 620 Simms Ave., to discuss and build support for its campaign to remove the question on applications that asks someone if he or she has been convicted of a felony.

It’s labeled as a “ban the box” campaign and targets the hiring practices of the city of Harrisonburg and area companies. Association President Karen Thomas said one of the reasons men and women struggle to adapt to life outside of jail is the difficulty finding employment.

The felony question on the application doesn’t help the process, she said.

“I feel like a lot of times that goes directly into the trash,” Thomas said.
