HARRISONBURG — Arraignment on more than 130 charges of animal cruelty and neglect against the owners of Millcreek Kennels is set for Oct. 16 in Page County General District Court.

Lennis Atkins, 74, and William Atkins, 53, were charged last week with a host of counts related to a July 3 raid. They made their first court appearance Thursday morning, at which time the arraignment date was set.

In July, the Page County Sheriff's Office, with the help of Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Animal Rescue Corps, seized about 130 dogs and four parrots from Millcreek, at 1608 Mills Creek Crossroads.

The investigation into the kennel, which deputies say is owned by Lennis Atkins and her son, William, began in late June when ARC leaders contacted the sheriff's office.

Deputies say someone out of state purchased a dog from the breeder and took it to the vet. The vet diagnosed the dog with health problems and notified ARC.

The kennel owners have said their business, which started more than 50 years ago, has passed state and county inspections.
