LURAY — For the fourth consecutive year, Page County Public Schools will kick off the new school year with a new leader at its helm.

The Page County School Board named Donna Whitley-Smith as acting superintendent effective immediately. Her appointment follows the abrupt retirement of Donna Power during a closed session Aug. 6.

“We have no plans to enter into a fresh search for a superintendent,” said board Chairman Morgan Phenix, adding that the local school system has “a very sizable applicant pool” within the division. “I think we made a pretty decisive statement … by appointing Donna Whitley-Smith on the heels of Donna Power.”

For at least the next month, Whitley-Smith will continue leading the 3,400-student school system. The 39-year educator said she “hasn’t considered” whether she will seek the position permanently.

The first day of school is Aug. 25.
