HARRISONBURG — The Virginia State Police has turned over its investigation of a Rockingham County sheriff’s deputy’s crash to the county commonwealth’s attorney’s office.
A special prosecutor will be assigned to review Trooper Robert Lawson’s investigation, state police Sgt. F.L. Tyler said in a Wednesday afternoon press release.
It was not immediately clear what the investigation determined, but on Tuesday, VSP First Sgt. Frank Pyanoe indicated that the deputy, Donald Landes, would be found at fault.
That doesn’t necessarily mean Landes will face charges, police say.
Landes was heading north on Main Street in Harrisonburg responding to an attempted suicide call Monday morning when he ran a red light at the intersection of Main and Elizabeth streets. He struck city resident Erma Davis, who was westbound on Elizabeth.
Both were treated for minor injuries at Sentara RMH Medical Center.
