Daily News-Record

Stanley firefighters are battling a sawdust bin fire at a door manufacturing company in town.

Chief Terry Pettit of the Stanley Volunteer Fire Company said firefighters responded to the Masonite plant, located at 280 Donovan Road, around 9 am.

Pettit said an auger loading sawdust onto a tractor-trailer ignited the sawdust in the bin.

"The plant filled up with smoke but there was no fire in inside the plant," said Pettit.

There were 120 employees in the plant at the time of the blaze. All evacuated safely, said Pettit.

The plant is closed for the rest of the day.

Pettit said 30 firefighters from Luray and Stanley responded to the scene.

As of 4 p.m., firefighters were still on scene putting out the flames.

He said extinguishing the blaze is a tedious process.

"We have to unload the dust in minimal amounts and spray it with water," he said.
