Victim Spit On, Attacked, Police Say
HARRISONBURG — Two men have been charged with a hate crime after police say they spit and threw alcoholic beverages at another man, called him racial slurs and then attacked him at a home in Harrisonburg over the weekend.
Christian Dan Reinertson, 20, of Harrisonburg and Jacob Devoshen Faircloth, 23, of Wise, both were charged with felony assault (hate crime), according to a statement from the Harrisonburg Police Department.
The statement says the victim was leaving a home in the 1000 block of Lois Lane at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when “several subjects” began spitting and throwing drinks at him from a deck, and using racial slurs.
“When the victim asked the group why they were doing this, the subjects jumped from the railing and attacked the victim,” according to the statement from HPD. “The victim was struck in the face and while on the ground was kicked numerous times by several individuals.”
Reinertson and Faircloth were identified as the offenders and taken into custody Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
Police did not identify the races of either the victim or the two suspects. Police say the investigation is continuing and it’s not clear if anyone else might be charged or if additional suspects are being sought.
