HARRISONBURG — The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what it believes was a murder suicide in Verona late Thursday.

At 10:40 p.m., deputies responded to a single-family home in the 100 block of Oak Crest Drive for a report that two people had been discovered dead inside, according to a press release. Two bodies, a man and woman both 56 years old, were found in the master bedroom, dead from gunshot wounds, police say.

A weapon was recovered.

The investigation is ongoing, but the preliminary determination is a murder suicide, the press release says. The victims were sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke, and results are pending, as is identification of the victims until their next of kin is notified.
