HARRISONBURG – Same-sex couples in Virginia could begin marrying next week after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit today denied a request to delay implementation of lifting the state's marriage ban.

According to the ACLU of Virginia, same-sex couples may begin marrying and having their out-of-state marriages recognized in Virginia on August 20, unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes.

Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk Michèle McQuigg had asked the appeals court to delay implementation while she asks the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case, and she may still ask the Supreme Court to stay the Fourth Circuit ruling, an ACLU press release says.
