HARRISONBURG — An employee with a Virginia Department of Transportation contractor was struck in a work zone on Interstate 81 overnight Tuesday, but suffered only minor injuries, the company president says.

The employee is a temporary worker for Lanford Brothers Co. of Roanoke and was transported to Sentara RMH Medical Center. The work zone is on I-81 northbound near mile marker 251 in Harrisonburg, VDOT spokeswoman Sandy Myers said.

Virginia State Police is investigating the incident, which occurred at about 2:10 a.m., Sgt. F.L. Tyler said. Additional details from police were not immediately available Tuesday, but the contractor's president, Ken Lanford, said the employee had only a bruised ankle.

"It looks like everything is going to turn out OK," he said.
