The Virginia Department of Transportation reports that Interstate 81 in Augusta, Rockingham and Shenandoah counties are in moderate condition, meaning that snow or ice is covering a major portion of the highway.
As the storm fizzles out this afternoon, VDOT is urging residents to stay off the roadways unless it's absolutely necessary.
Crews have been working 12-hour shifts, 24 hours a day.
As of 11 a.m., primary and secondary roads in most of the Shenandoah Valley are in moderate condition Secondary roads in Page County are in severe condition, meaning many of them are blocked because of snow. Snow chains or tires would be necessary to drive on the roadway.
