NEW: Winds Knock Out Power To School

Scattered Outages Throughout Area Reported

HARRISONBURG — High winds temporarily knocked out power to Ottobine Elementary School today. Scattered outages also were reported at homes and businesses throughout the central Valley Wednesday night and today. It’s not clear how long power was out at the school but it was restored by 2:45 p.m.

A power line sparked a small forest fire — one that grew to a little more than an acre — after it was ripped out of its utility pole by a tree that was in turn felled by strong winds Wednesday night.

The fire occurred near the Rockingham-Shenandoah county line off Runions Creek Road at about 8 p.m. and was extinguished by 11 p.m. Several homes in the area lost power due to the downed line.

Additional scattered outages were reported throughout the region Wednesday night and today, mostly due to downed or damaged power lines.

Sustained winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour and gusts of over 50 mph were reported in some parts of the central Valley this morning.
