Draft Nears Third Straight RCBL Title

Posted: August 18, 2014

CLOVER HILL – Third baseman Jay Thompson had RBI singles in each of the first two innings, and Stuarts Draft built an early five-run advantage to cruise to an 8-1 victory over Clover Hill in a Rockingham County Baseball League finals game Saturday night at Buck Bowman Park.

The Diamondbacks, who lead the best-of-seven championship series 3-1, can clinch their third consecutive County League title with a victory over the Bucks tonight at The Diamond Club.

“Somebody picks somebody up every night, you know?” Draft manager Tinker Kiser said. “That’s the thing that’s kind of dangerous about us – it can come from anywhere in the lineup.”

Draft starting pitcher Trevor Noorman struck out eight and surrendered just one hit over six innings, while relievers T.J. Frazier and Donovan Huffer combined for three more scoreless frames. Meanwhile, Draft’s lineup – led by three hits from left fielder Corbin Lucas — outhit Clover Hill 10-3.

Huffer also finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

In 2009, the Bucks rallied back from a 3-1 championship series to defeat the Diamondbacks in seven games.

“We haven’t forgotten that,” Kiser said. “But naturally it is an advantage to be up.”

Today’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
