HARRISONBURG — More than 500 customers of the Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative — all in Frederick County — are without power due to strong winds associated with Hurricane Sandy, according to a release this afternoon from SVEC.

The cooperative serves an area from Highland County north to Winchester. No outages have been reported as of 4:30 p.m. among its customers in Rockingham, Page and Shenandoah counties.

About 300 Dominion Virginia Power customers in the central Valley/Piedmont area are without power as well, but almost all of those are in Albemarle County. In Northern Virginia, the utility is reporting more than 8,000 homes and businesses are without power.

The Harrisonburg Electric Commission says no customers are without power as of 4:30 p.m.
