Page County Barn Destroyed

Posted: April 23, 2014

A fire that destroyed a barn in Page County on Monday likely started from a heat lamp that ignited straw in the back of the structure, firefighters said Tuesday night.

Stanley Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit said firefighters responded to the barn fire at 136 Varner Drive, about four miles southeast of Stanley, off Pine Grove Road, about 8:30 p.m.

Firefighters say the barn was fully involved and was beginning to spread to the house when they arrived.

Pettit said that the barn contained workshop tools, mowers, saws and 15 pheasants that the owners were raising. All the pheasants died in the fire.

The barn, owned by Tim and Donna Varner, was a total loss, the chief said.

Damage is estimated to be around $75,000. The building was insured, the chief said.

Pettit said it took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. Firefighters were on the scene for about four hours.
