Pence Worth Watching

New Conservative Star Emerges

Posted: September 14, 2013

We commend to your attention the waxing star of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, and reprise a few words published in The Winchester Star from January: “We’ve long liked this thoroughly likable (and firmly principled) Hoosier. A paragon of fiscal virtue during his 12 years in the [U.S.] House — and a social conservative, to boot — Mr. Pence ... is a conservative worth watching these next four years.”

It took a while, but finally political observers beyond the borders of Indiana have taken the same notice we did in January. The Daily Caller’s Matt Lewis had this to say about Mr. Pence earlier this week:

“He’s more charismatic than Scott Walker, more conservative than Chris Christie and, unlike so many of the top-tier 2016 Republicans, he has actually run a state. So why isn’t ... Mike Pence generating the kind of buzz worthy of a top-tier candidate? Probably because while his opponents have been show horses, he’s been a work horse. And that makes him a dark horse.”

Yes, for someone who was actually courted, albeit momentarily, as a possible presidential candidate in late 2011, Mr. Pence has been cruising below the radar. Given his success building on the solid foundation bequeathed him by former Gov. Mitch Daniels, that may change ... eventually.

“Look, someone who nobody is talking about right now will surprise everyone and catch fire in late 2015 and be in a strong position right before the caucuses arrive,” GOP strategist Kevin Madden says.
Don’t be surprised if that “someone” is Mike Pence.
