Registration Open For Battlefield’s Homeschool Day

Posted: March 4, 2013

NEW MARKET — Registration is now open for the Virginia Museum of the Civil War’s 6th annual Homeschool Day on March 23.

The event is not open just to homeschoolers. Public and private school students and their families are also welcome at the event, which organizers say will turn the 300-acre New Market Battlefield State Historical Park into a “hands-on learning center.”

The museum will staff the park with more than 50 volunteers and costumed interpreters, Major Troy Marshall, the site’s director, said in a statement.

Visitors can learn to drill with Confederate Army reenactors, dance the Virginia Reel, enjoy 19th century games and crafts, take a guided tour through the battlefield and learn about the Battle of New Market. Area ecological groups also will be on hand to educate participants about the unique natural resources found at the park.

Those interested in registering for Homeschool Day or to get more information on the event can visit www.vmi.edu/newmarket or call 866-515-1864. Special discounted admission of $3 per person is available only to registered families.
