STAUNTON – According to the Virginia Department of Transportation's Staunton District, Interstate 81 northbound will have a detour tonight as part of operations to clear a tractor-trailer crash that occurred earlier today near Lexington in Rockbridge County.

VDOT, in a statement, said that work will begin at 8 p.m. and may last until 7 a.m. The ramp from Interstate 64 eastbound onto I-81 northbound will be closed. It's at I-64 exit 56 and I-81 exit 191.

The department said that traffic from I-64 eastbound heading northbound on I-81 will be routed to the I-81 southbound on-ramp at I-81 exit 191; traffic will proceed southbound on I-81 to exit 188A at Va. 60 in Lexington. Traffic will use exit 188A to access the I-81 northbound lanes. Detour signs will be in place.

According to the statement, the left lane on I-81 northbound will be closed at mile-marker 191.5, which is where the tractor-trailer cleanup is located.

All work is weather permitting.
