HARRISONBURG — A Rockingham County toddler was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center after being mauled by a pit bull on Thursday.

Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said a 2-year-old girl was bitten in the face by the dog around noon.

Hutcheson did not identify the girl or her family.

Hutcheson said the incident happened north of Broadway off of Runions Creek Road, and that the animal involved was familiar to the family.

He did not have an update on her condition as of press time, only saying that she was transferred to the Charlottesville hospital with “pretty serious injuries.”

The circumstances surrounding the biting were not clear, and Hutcheson wasn’t sure whether the dog involved was seized by animal control.

The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
