SHS Tops In Tennis
HARRISONBURG — Spotswood High School senior Josh Rodgers beat fellow Trailblazer Joe Dillenbeck 6-3, 6-3 in the Valley District individual boys’ tennis championship Friday.
Moments later, the two players teamed to defeat Turner Ashby duo Taylor Garber and Josh Bollinger 6-3, 6-3 in the doubles final.
On the girls’ side, Spotswood senior Briana DeLaGarza defeated Holly Knupp 7-5, 6-1 for the individual championship, but Knupp didn’t leave title-less.
The Broadway senior, teaming with senior Whitney Cash, defeated fellow BHS tandem Sarah Donaire and Olivia Driver 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 7-5 in a doubles match that began at Harrisonburg High School and finished at the indoor courts at the Doug Will Tennis Center when rain impeded the second set.
Rodgers, Dillenbeck and Harrisonburg junior Antoine Timbers — who defeated R.E. Lee’s Matt Johnson in a consolation match — all qualify for the Region III singles tournament, which begins Tuesday.
Knupp, DeLaGarza and Donaire will represent the Valley in girls’ singles.
In boys’ doubles, Rodgers/Dillenbeck, Garber/Bollinger and Timbers/Ross made the regionals; Knupp/Cash, Donaire/Driver and DeLaGarza/Hunter are there for the girls.
