Posted: June 15, 2012

David Kocka, district wildlife biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and Sgt. S.L. Dean with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office load a female black bear yearling into a transport box Thursday afternoon near theQuaker Steak and Lube restaurant on University Boulevard in Harrisonburg. Kocka tranquilized the animal, estimated to be about 60 pounds and a year old.
The bear, spotted by a city police officer near Country Club Road, crossed East Market Street near Spotswood Square and Valley Mall before finding shelter in a patch of trees close to the restaurant. Kocka will release the bear in national forestland west of Harrisonburg today. In August 2008, Kocka tranquilized a 70-pound cub that was spotted running near Red Front grocery store on Chicago Avenue. This is a typical time of year for yearlings to be found searching for food alone, Kocka said.
