Chief: Stanley Home ‘A Total Loss’

Posted: July 20, 2013

STANLEY - A fire at a residence on Hawksbill Park Road just outside Stanley on Friday morning caused $175,000 worth of damage and rendered the home “a total loss,” according to a press release from Stanley Fire Chief Terry Pettit.

When firefighters arrived about 10:30 a.m., fire was coming from the attic, where an electrical short in a wire ignited the blaze.

Firefighters battled the fire for three hours, but after returning to the station were called back because the fire reignited in a downstairs room.

Extinguishing the fire proved difficult for crews with the Stanley, Luray and Shenandoah fire departments due to the day’s 90-plus degree temperatures, Pettit said.

Homeowners Ricky and Cam Lucas were not at home at the time of the fire.

According to Pettit, the Lucases were able to recover “a large amount of furniture and other household items” before the fire spread downstairs.
