Winter Storm Warning Extended To 9 P.M. Thursday

This afternoon, the National Weather Service extended its winter storm warning for the area to 9 p.m. Thursday. The warning goes into effect at 6 p.m.

Snow is expected to start falling between 5 and 7 p.m. today, with accumulations of 10 to 15 inches, reaching 20 inches at elevations above 1,000 feet, the weather service says.

Heavy at times, snow will continue through Thursday afternoon, tapering off early Thursday evening.

The Virginia Department of Transportation advises that people should make plans to shelter in place and avoid travel if at all possible during the storm.
