HARRISONBURG — The Grottoes Police Department is questioning a suspect in the theft of a town fire department vehicle.

After a short standoff on Valley View Road in McGaheysville Tuesday afternoon, a woman was taken into custody, Grottoes Police Chief John Painter said at the scene. The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office handled the standoff, calling in a SWAT unit because of a “possibility” of weapons inside the home, Painter said.

Additional details on the suspect were unavailable, but she is the only “person of interest,” the chief said.

The fire vehicle was reported stolen around 7 a.m. and found by Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson at about 10:30 a.m. across from Mount Olive Brethren Church on Pineville Road in McGaheysville, Painter said. Foot tracks in the snow led investigators to the house nearby on Valley View Road.
