TA Students Rise Up To Market Challenge

Posted: May 4, 2013

HARRISONBURG — A group of Turner Ashby High School students placed first regionally out of 262 teams and fifth in the state out of more than 2,000 teams in the spring Stock Market Challenge organized by the Virginia Council on Economic Education.

The winning team included seniors Gabino Cruz-Hernandez, Davey Stone, Joshua Varner, all members of Chris Noll’s math class at TA.

The challenge asks students to buy and sell stocks with virtual money. In a 10-month window, the students turned $100,000 of computer money into $117,400.

The students also paired with Del. Steve Landes, R-Weyers Cave, to be part of the first-ever General Assembly Challenge. They placed first out of 15 teams, which were also paired with delegates.

Only legislators on education-related committees were asked to participate this year. Landes is a member of the House of Delegates education committee.

The students will be recognized at the end of the month at a statewide awards ceremony in Richmond.

“I have been impressed with how well you did as a team,” Landes told the students, according to a press release. “The most important thing is the valuable real-world experiences you have gained.”

The TA team was trained using resources from James Madison University’s Center for Economic Education, one of nine university-based centers affiliated with the Virginia Council on Economic Education.
