BRIDGEWATER – The Turner Ashby High School volleyball team scored 11 straight points in the first set of Thursday night’s contest against Eastern Mennonite and won 25-12, 25-16, 25-20 in both teams’ season openers.
“We haven’t played in two weeks,” TA coach Gina Troyer said. “We had a scrimmage two weeks ago, so we’ve just been scrimmaging each other in practice. So, tonight the girls were a little nervous.”
The Knights settled in quickly after going back and forth with EMHS over the first few points. The 11-0 run put them in front 16-5 in the opening set.
TA used the momentum to close out the set and match.
Harrisonburg 3, Page County 2: Senior middle hitter Kaelen Adams had 18 kills and five blocks to lead Harrisonburg High School to a 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 19-25, 15-13 victory over Page County in a volleyball match Thursday in Shenandoah.
The Blue Streaks improved to 1-0; the Panthers fell to 1-1.
Sophomore libero Athena Benton had 35 digs for HHS, and senior setter Ananda McAfee added 33 assists.
Spotswood 3, Sherando 2: Sophomore outside hitter Addisen DeLucas had 17 kills, and senior setter Elizabeth Dofflemyer tallied 47 assists as Spotswood High School defeated Sherando 26-24, 22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10 Thursday in Penn Laird.
The Trailblazers improved to 2-0; the Warriors fell to 0-1.
Senior libero McKenzie Jenkins added 32 digs for SHS.
