TA Blasts Giants, 51-30

Records Fall In Knights’ Win

Posted: November 9, 2013

WAYNESBORO – Turner Ashby High School seniors Shane Brown and Evan Hanifee ended their high school careers with school records.

Brown ran 20 times for 248 yards to set the school’s single-season rushing record and scored three touchdowns to lead the Knights to a 51-30 win over Waynesboro in the regular season finale for both teams Friday night.

Hanifee threw for 92 yards to set the new TA single-season passing record at 1,497, eclipsing Dave Miller’s mark that’s stood since 1966 by four yards. Brown surpassed Dennis Dellinger’s mark of 1,474 rushing yards set in 1971, setting the new bar at 1,553 yards.

The major records fell despite a disappointing season for the Knights (3-7).

“We did a great job running the football,” TA coach Charlie Newman said. “Of course, Shane was doing his usual thing. It’s just amazing how he can get to the second level, make a cut and be gone. … I think it’s special that he was able to go ahead and get [the record], especially in a disappointing year.”

On a cold night the Little Giants battled the entire way but were unable to overcome Brown’s performance. It came on the heels of Brown receiving a letter from Dellinger this week, which Newman said encouraged the TA star to break the record.

The two teams traded punts throughout the first quarter before Brown got rolling for TA. He scored on a big 46-yard run that put the Knights on top 7-0 at the 2:25 mark of the first quarter.

The Little Giants (1-9) came right back and used a big 77-yard completion from Anthony Atkins to Jordan Alexander to the TA 1-yard line. Dominique Gray scored on a dive, making it 7-6 after the extra point was blocked.

The Knights then went to Brown through the air as he hauled in a 32-yard pass from Hanifee to the Waynesboro 18. A few plays later, Seth Hill scored on an 8-yard run to give TA a 13-6 lead after the kick failed at 10:26 of the second period.

It was Brown again on the Knights’ next possession on a 34-yard run to the Little Giant 21. Brown capped that drive on a 4-yard run moments later and the kick failed after a 15-yard penalty against TA. The Knights led was 19-6 with 5:27 left until halftime.

Waynesboro’s DQ Barber intercepted near midfield, but the Little Giants were unable to score.

TA’s Cody Warner then picked off a Waynesboro pass and moved the ball into Little Giants’ territory. With 1.3 seconds left in the half, Hanifee hit his brother, Brenan, on a 19-yard pass to the corner of the endzone and the Knights took a 26-6 lead to the break.

Brenan Hanifee came up 49 yards shy of breaking TA’s single-season receiving record of 727 yards, set by Chase Miller in 2010.

The Knights led by as much as 33-6 in the third quarter after a pair of Brown runs set up a 7-yard TD pass from Evan Hanifee to tight end Ethan Harris.

Waynesboro got a big 53-yard run by Alexander to cut the lead to 33-14 at the 3:11 mark of the third period. Two touchdown receptions by Qua’Sean Napier and Anthony Atkins highlighted the Little Giants’ fourth period.

Alexander paced WHS with 128 yards rushing on 14 carries while Veney added 80 yards on 20 rushes. Napier tallied 48 yards on two catches and a TD.

“It’s really big for these guys to get this win,” Newman said. “These seniors have been through a lot the last three years. This is one of those up and down years. We came in here really wanting and kind of expecting to get this win. The kids were pretty pumped all week. We had some great individual efforts tonight and all year.

In addition to Brown, Hill rushed 11 times for 92 yards and Hanifee completed 8-of-17 passes for 92 yards and three scores.

“The kids played hard,” WHS coach Derek McDaniel said. “We were a little shorthanded.  We brought a little excitement to the second half.”
