Tandem Bicycle Event Planned For June 20-22
Tandem bicyclists will ride across historic Meems Bottom covered bridge, enjoy views of distant mountains from the Valley or beautiful vistas from atop the ridgelines, and visit Civil War monuments throughout the region in an event scheduled for the third weekend of June.
The event, called the Mid-Atlantic Tandem EnthusiastS or “MATES,” will be based in Mount Jackson and take place June 20-22.
“We have 35 teams registered, with a maximum registration of 50, so there is room for 15 more,” said Karen Hass, who is coordinating the event with her husband, Ed Hass.
The event is not a race. Participants can leave to ride out into the countryside whenever they want, usually between noon and 4 p.m. Friday, and from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
A registration fee of $235 per team includes meals, T-shirts, maps and more. Special pricing is available for family members accompanying a team.
“We’ve been doing MATES in various places along the East Coast states, from North Carolina to New Jersey, for over 15 years, with approximately half in Virginia, and it’s always a well-attended and fun weekend,” Hass said.
