HARRISONBURG — The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing next month on a proposal that VDOT officials say will improve safety at a widely used intersection in Rockingham County.
The project calls for the addition of left-turn lanes at the intersection of U.S. 340 and Port Republic Road, located south of Elkton.
The hearing is slated for 4 p.m. on March 26 at South River Elementary School in Grottoes.
The project would consist of two thru-lanes and a 12-foot left-turn lane that would feed motorists turning from U.S. 340, also known as Eastside Highway, onto Port Republic Road. The road also will have 10-foot shoulders and roadside ditches. Paved shoulders also will be constructed to accommodate future bicycle and/or pedestrian needs. Widening also will take place on the eastern side of U.S. 340.
