Two TA Players 1st-Team All-State
HARRISONBURG – It was a resurgent baseball season for Turner Ashby High School, which benefited greatly from a pair of strong-hitting infielders at the corners.
TA third baseman Evan Hanifee and first baseman Luke Shiflett were both named to the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Group AA first team on Sunday.
Hanifee, a rising senior who has verbally committed to George Mason, led the Knights in batting average (.544, 43-for-79), RBIs (33), runs (38), steals (19), home runs (seven), doubles (13), triples (five) and walks (19). The Region III Player of the Year also set a TA record by hitting .585 during the regular season.
Shiflett batted .475 (38-for-80) with 27 RBIs and 24 runs for the Knights (18-6), who lost to Amherst in the Region III semifinals. Shiflett will play at D-II Alderson-Broaddus next year.
Tunstall pitcher Luke Simpson won Player of the Year, and Sherando’s Pepper Martin was named Coach of the Year.
TA senior catcher Ryan Hedrick, who hit .446 (37-for-83) with 28 RBIs, joined Hanifee and Shiflett on the all-state list, earning honorable mention.
Spotswood senior left-hander Austin Nicely, the Valley District Pitcher of the Year, was one of four pitchers to receive honorable mention. Nicely (5-1, 1.73 ERA) was selected by the Houston Astros with the first pick in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball draft.
SHS (17-4) swept the Valley District regular season and tournament titles this spring.
