PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A sailor accused of abusing his newborn son in a hospital intensive care unit faces new child abuse charges.
Portsmouth police tell media outlets that 21-year-old Matthew Wayne Strawn was charged with felony child abuse on Wednesday. He was charged in February with felony child abuse and felonious assault.
Police also charged the infant's mother, 20-year-old Allie Samantha Strawn, on Wednesday with felony child abuse.
Staff at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center discovered on Tuesday that the infant had a broken rib after Allie Strawn brought him to the hospital.
Police say the injury occurred during a visit by Allie Strawn to the hospital barracks, where Matthew Strawn is staying.
Navy records show that Matthew Strawn is a hospitalman at the Navy Branch Health Clinic and Norfolk Naval Station.
