The Valley District on Wednesday canceled the rest of its boys' and girls' basketball tournaments because of a forecast of heavy snow.
The games, scheduled for Wednesday and today, will not be made up, the district announced.
Under the Virginia High School League's new playoff system, district tournaments have no bearing on the postseason. They are essentially exhibition events for local bragging rights, so canceling them will not impact postseason seedings.
The new system — featuring "conference" tournaments in the first round — tips off next week for Valley schools. Harrisonburg/Rockingham high schools are spread out over three conferences.
