Editor Lauren Jefferson and staff writer Florence Barrett won two awards at the Virginia Press Association News, Editorial and Photo Contest.

Entries from the North Fork Journal and Shenandoah Journal competed against 46 other Virginia non-daily newspapers with circulations between 5,000 and 9,999.

Jefferson won second place in the investigative/in-depth reporting category with her series about the local whitetail deer herds, which ran in both newspapers over several months in the fall of 2011.

Barrett won third place in the feature writing category with her article published in the Shenandoah Journal about Scrapple, a miniature pig owned by Ryan and Michael Cave, of Briery Branch (“It’s a Pig’s Life,” Dec. 13, 2011).

The awards were presented in Roanoke April 21 during the annual VPA awards banqet.
