AS A (RETIRED) PROFESSOR, I know that sexual assault on college campuses is a critical national problem. I was glad to learn that the recently introduced Campus Safety and Accountability Bill, co-sponsored by Mark Warner, will require colleges to fix their broken systems of dealing with the problem. Recently, Senator Warner publically commended Gov. McAuliffe’s forming a task force on the issue.
The Senate bill establishes a standardized, open and transparent process for dealing with sexual assaults. It mandates an advocate for victims and training for university officials in dealing with victims. Schools that don’t comply face financial penalties. This bill is an excellent example of how Senator Warner has worked for six years in Congress: Identify a problem, find a common-sense solution, and organize a bipartisan group to back that solution.
Thankfully this important issue is finally being tackled, and I hope other senators will follow Mark Warner’s lead.
