Double Clicks
Following last week’s theme, the second half of the annual review follows.
Many web addresses have been shortened using bit.ly.
The websites follow, in order of appearance, along with a short description.
- Google Calendar: calendar.google.com. One accompanies gmail, but it may also be used as an online calendar with advanced features.
- Microsoft: microsoft.com. Everything Microsoft, software, hardware, Office, solutions, templates, etc.
- Ninite: ninite.com. Select apps and “Get Installer” to automatically install the chosen apps in one step for your new/rebuilt Windows computer.
- Hotmail (slowly becoming Outlook), Gmail & Yahoo mail: hotmail.com, outlook.com, gmail.com, mail.yahoo.com. The most popular online email services.
- OpenDNS: opendns.com. Keeps Internet access safe and secure, especially for families.
- W3Schools.com: A free site dedicated to web coding — good starting point for beginners.
- Amazon.com: Best place to find online purchases.
- Google Play: play.google.com. Where all of the “approved” Android apps are found.
- Google, DropBox, PayPal: These are several of the many sites that offer two-factor authentication for security.
- DNROnline.com, DoubleClicks.info, WSVAOnline.com: Local spots to find information from Double Clicks.
- Ubuntu: ubuntu.com. A free operating system available to replace Windows.
- Sound Hound: soundhound.com. The site for the iOS and Android app, which identifies songs.
- Password Generator: passwordsgenerator.net. Will randomly generate passwords; only downside is they will be totally unmemorable.
- Password Security: bit.ly/pwchecker. Check password strength according to Microsoft.
- Leet Speak Translator: brenz.net/services/l337Maker.asp. Find my article first if you’re confused.
- LastPass: lastpass.com. One of the highest-rated places for keeping track of passwords online.
- KeePass: keepass.info. My highest rated applications for keeping passwords locally.
- DameWare (dameware.com), Go to Assist (gotoassist.com), PC Anywhere (symantec.com/pcanywhere), LogMeIn (logmein.com): Some of the more popular and recommended support applications, which allow you to log into another user’s system in order to assist them.
- Join Me: join.me. The same as above, but free and easy to use.
- Dropbox (bit.ly/use-DropBox), Google Drive (drive.google.com), SkyDrive (skydrive.live.com), Carbonite (carbonite.com): These all provide online cloud storage for important files. Some are free, some are not.
I look forward to continuing the discussions about software, computers, the Internet and technology this year. I hope that you, your families and friends have a great 2013, and continue to join me in the news, on the radio and the web!
